Prof. Meinrat Andreae bestowed Honorary Professor
|
On 6th January, Prof. Dr. O. Meinrat Andreae was appointed honorary professor of the Institute of Earth Sciences at the JGU Mainz.
Prof. Andreae taught as Professor of Oceanography at Florida State University before he was appointed Director of the Department of Biogeochemistry at the Max-Plank-Institute for Chemistry in Mainz in 1987. He was one of the world's most cited scientists in 2003 and 2007 and co-author on the Third Assessment Report of the IPCC. Meinrat Andreae has been closely associated with the Institute of Geosciences for many years. His contributions to teaching comprised mainly of biogeochemistry-lectures, a subject that was tackled only on rudimentary basis within the usual curriculum. This commitment will now be enhanced further. According to the report announcing his call, his contributions will enrich not only teaching in lectures and seminars, but will also complement the new master's program in earth sciences with an elective course in biogeochemistry. It will also complement the support of doctoral students and postdoctoral candidates, for example by offering doctoral colloquia. The appointment of Prof. Andreae strengthens the already good scientific relations between the Max-Planck-Institute for Chemistry and the JGU and is a further guarantee for future-oriented research and teaching in the field of earth sciences in Mainz.
